BACKWARD SKIING POLICY
BACKWARD SKIING:
* This is defined as going in the wrong direction as posted by the trail signs and is not
permitted on the trails at Bohart Ranch.
* Bohart Ranch Cross Country Ski Center's Nordic Trails are typically skied in a counter clockwise direction, unless marked otherwise.
* Anyone who skis onto trails marked "Do Not Enter" or "One Way", opposite of the correct directions of normal ski traffic is in violation of the Backward Skiing Policy and is subject to forfeiture of skiing privileges.
REASONS FOR THIS POLICY:
* LIABILITY --- The offending individual is personally responsible for any accidents or injury sustained during the event of a violation.
* CONFUSION --- Backward skiing confuses people and leads them in the wrong direction.
* INTIMIDATION --- Beginner and intermediate skiers can be intimidated by a backward skier heading towards them on the trail, especially on hills.
* HAZARDS --- Backward skiing destroys the grooming and causes difficulty for other skiers.
EXCEPTIONS TO THIS POICY:
* The Two-Way Road to Jane's Gate
* From the Two-Way Road to the end of Runaway (between intersections #9 and #11).
* From Lookout to Montagne's Meander and to Ridge / Montagne's Junction (between intersections #32 and #33, and #35).
* The Inner Meadow Loop and all other trails marked in ORANGE on the trail map
FAILURE TO COMPLY:
* First offense will be a warning
* Second offense by the same person will result in a 2 week suspension of skiing privileges
PLEASE:
* RESPECT SLOWER SKIERS
* USE CAUTION AT MERGING TRAILS

BOHART SKI TRAILS
Bohart Ranch works hard to maintain it's international reputation for having excellent ski trails. The 25 km trail system, originally designed by Dick Taylor in 1982, is unique because of it's connecting loops which allow skiers to make the choice at numerous intersections to head back to the lodge or to continue their ski. Chris Myers, co-owner of Bohart, oversees the Bohart trail system. He has over 20 years of experience in trail development, maintenance and grooming, and was invited to help with Nordic grooming at the Salt Lake Olympic games because of his expertise.
Maintaining trails that provide excellent skiing is a year around job. In the summer Chris and his crew limb trees, and pull rocks and stumps. Chris estimates Bohart has pulled over 2,000 stumps! Each year trails are re-seeded with grass. Trails are mowed all summer so the short stubble will begin catching the first snowfall and building an early base.
Trail improvement projects in the summer include widening, improving grades and installing culverts. As part of an ongoing project Bohart has installed 13 culverts which help build the early base and maintain good trail conditions throughout the season.
Over the years new connecting trails have been added to the system. This past summer a trail affectionately known as The Grunt was redesigned to make it more skiable. The trail has been renamed Tommy's Turn after Chris's dog Tommy who keeps him company during summer trail projects.
Trails are groomed with a Bombardier 180 and a super wide track snowmobile, which pulls the latest technology in trail grooming implements. In early season as soon as the temperature is in the 20's and the trails are covered with 2-3 inches of snow, grooming begins with the snowmobile pulling the roller to begin compacting the base. Grooming is also done with a Ginzugroomer implement pulled by the snowmobile which tills the base and prevents it from becoming icy.
Because of the year around work season pass holders enjoy excellent pre-season skiing on a minimum base. Once the base is packed to 8-12 inches grooming can begin with the Bombardier. This state-of-the-art grooming machine is specially designed for Nordic grooming. Chris has retrofitted it with several modifications to better meet the grooming needs of Bohart.
Come ski Bohart Ranch cross country ski trails and see for yourself why we are so proud of our trail system!
